Content protection
How do you stop people forwarding your Telegram messages?
In a channel or group, the owner opens Edit › Channel Type (or Group Type) and turns on Restrict saving content. Members can then no longer forward, copy, save or screenshot its messages. For one-on-one chats, Telegram Premium users get Disable Sharing in the person’s profile menu.
Content protection is Telegram’s setting that blocks forwarding, copying, downloading and screenshots for messages in one chat. It does not hide your name on forwards: that is a separate privacy setting.
Weekly setup: entry zones and stops for Monday. Members only.

Try an action, then switch protection on.
What exactly does content protection block?
Pick where the protection was switched on. Locked actions turn red, actions that still work stay green.
Applies to every message in the chat, old and new, for as long as the switch stays on.
How do you turn on restrict forwarding in a channel, group or private chat?
Three different places, three different rules about who is allowed to flip the switch.
Channel or group
Owner only
- Open the chat and tap its name
- Tap Edit (the pencil)
- Channel Type or Group Type
- Turn on Restrict saving content and save
Small basic groups are upgraded to a supergroup when you switch it on. Telegram’s API reserves this toggle for the owner, so admins do not see it.
One-on-one chat
Premium
- Open the person’s profile
- Tap the ⋮ menu
- Disable Sharing
Blocks screenshots, forwarding, copying and saving for both of you. If the other person switched it on, your tap sends them a request instead of turning it off.
Messages from your bot
Developers
protect_content: true
Bots can protect individual messages in any chat with this Bot API parameter, even where the chat itself is unprotected.
Older guides say the chat must be private first. In the current Telegram for Android app the switch sits on the same Type screen for public and private chats.
What does “Copying and forwarding is not allowed” mean?
These are the exact notices Telegram shows. Tap one to see who switched it on and what you can still do.
The owner turned on Restrict saving content. Every post is covered, including old ones.
Share the channel link instead of the post, or ask the owner whether a post can be shared publicly.
Looking for a way around it? Telegram has no setting that unlocks protected content for members. Bots and apps that promise to “download restricted content” usually ask you to log in with your number, which hands them your whole account. Treat that as an account takeover risk, not a shortcut.
Is restricting forwarding the same as hiding your name on forwards?
No. People mix them up because both mention forwarding. One stops the copy, the other only removes your name from it.
- Who sets it: chat owner, or a Premium user in a private chat
- Covers: every message in that one chat
- Result: no forward, copy, save or screenshot
- Who sets it: you, for your own messages
- Covers: everything you send, in every chat
- Path: Settings › Privacy and Security › Forwarded Messages › Nobody
Should your channel restrict forwarding?
Forwards are one of the main ways a channel gets discovered: every forwarded post carries your channel name into another chat. Protection closes that door. Pick your channel type to weigh it up.
People pay for access, so every forwarded post is lost revenue. Protect the chat and grow through a public preview channel instead.
What else do people ask about restricted forwarding?
How do I restrict forwarding in a Telegram group?
As the group owner, open the group, tap its name, tap Edit, choose Group Type and turn on Restrict saving content. Members can then no longer forward, copy or save messages and media from the group.
Can admins turn on Restrict saving content?
No. Telegram reserves content protection for the owner of the group or channel. Admins, even with every right, cannot switch it on or off.
Does restricting forwarding also block screenshots?
Yes. Telegram’s rules for protected chats disable screenshots and screen recording as well as forwarding, copying and downloading, wherever the device lets apps block them.
Can I stop someone forwarding my messages in a private chat?
Yes, with Telegram Premium. Open the person’s profile, tap the menu and choose Disable Sharing. It blocks screenshots, forwarding, copying and saving in that one chat for both of you.
How do I forward a message when forwarding is restricted?
You cannot. Telegram blocks it for every member until the owner turns protection off. Share the chat’s link instead, or ask the owner. Avoid tools that ask you to log in to download restricted content.
Does content protection apply to old messages?
Yes. The setting covers the whole chat, so older posts become protected as soon as it is switched on, and unprotected again when it is switched off.
How do I hide my name when my messages are forwarded?
Go to Settings › Privacy and Security › Forwarded Messages and choose Nobody. Your messages can still be forwarded, but they no longer link back to your account.
Which guides go with content protection?
How we checked this guide. On 24 October 2026 we read Telegram’s content protection rules for app developers, the current Telegram for Android source (the Type screen and its notices), and Telegram’s announcements of protected content (December 2021) and Disable Sharing (March 2026).
