How do you mute Telegram notifications?
Open the chat, group or channel, tap its name, then tap Mute and pick how long. To silence a whole category at once, go to Settings › Notifications and Sounds and switch off private chats, groups or channels.
- Nobody is told. Muting is private. The other person sees no change.
- Mentions and replies still reach you in a muted group, unless you muted that person too.
- Disable Sound keeps the banners and only removes the sound. Mute removes both.

Which kind of mute do you actually need?
“Mute” means three different things on Telegram. Most frustration comes from using the wrong one.

How do you mute a chat, group or channel on each device?
The mute you set on one device applies to your account, so you only need to do it once.
- Open the chat, group or channel.
- Tap the ⋮ menu at the top right, then Mute.
- Pick Disable Sound, a duration, Mute for… or Mute Forever.

How long can you mute a Telegram chat?
Anything from an hour to forever. Since Telegram 8.7 (April 2022), Mute for… lets you pick custom periods such as three hours, a week or three months. When a timed mute ends, notifications switch back on by themselves.

What still gets through when a chat is muted?

New messages arrive silently
They are delivered and counted as unread, but no banner, sound or vibration is shown until the mute ends.

How do you mute everything at once, or everything except one chat?
Settings › Notifications and Sounds works like a mixing desk: one switch per type of chat, plus exceptions. Flip the switches to see the result.
Everything can alert you. Mute single chats from their own menu.

Switch off private chats, then open Private Chats › Exceptions and add that contact with notifications on.

If you see Privacy and Security › Archive and Mute New Chats, turn it on. New chats from non-contacts arrive muted and archived.

Telegram has no schedule of its own. Use iPhone Focus or Android Do Not Disturb, and allow only the contacts who may break through.

What does muting mean if you run a group or channel?
Admins deal with muting from both directions: silencing members who flood the chat, and reaching subscribers who have muted you.
Restrict a member in a group
- Open the group and tap its name.
- Tap Members, then the person.
- Choose Restrict User, turn off Send Messages and set how long.
They stay in the group and can read, but cannot post until the restriction ends. Use Aggressive Anti-Spam for bots and floods.
Posting to a channel people have muted
- A muted subscriber still sees your post the next time they open Telegram, through the unread counter. They just do not get the alert.
- Use Silent Broadcast (the bell icon in the message bar) for minor posts at night, so fewer people mute you in the first place.
