How do you report someone on Telegram?
Report the message, not just the person. On Android tap it, on iPhone press and hold it, on Desktop, Mac or Web right-click it. Choose Report, pick the reason that fits, add a short comment and send. For a whole group or channel, open its ⋮ / More menu and choose Report. Moderators review it; the other person gets no notice from the app.
- Every apphas a Report button

Step 1 of 4: open the message menu.
Why are you reporting this?
Add a comment for the moderator
Report sent. Now block them from the bar at the top of the chat if you want the messages to stop.
Illustration. The real reason list comes from Telegram’s server and can differ.
What exactly are you reporting?
Telegram puts the Report button in a different place for each kind of target. Pick yours to see the exact path in every app.
Tap the message › Report › choose a reason › add a comment › Report.
Press and hold the message › Report › choose a reason › add a comment › Report.
Right-click the message › Report › choose a reason › add a comment › Report.
Reporting the message itself shows the moderator exactly what happened, so it beats a general complaint about the account.
How do you report a message, step by step?
Five moves, the same order in every app. Only the first move changes.
- 1
Tap the message once
A menu opens above it. To report several messages, long-press one first and tap the others to select them.
- 2
Choose Report
It is in the same menu as Reply and Copy. If it is missing, update Telegram from your app store and try again.
- 3
Pick the reason that fits best
Some reasons open a second, more precise list. Choose the narrowest one; it routes the report to the right review queue.
- 4
Add one clear sentence
Say what the message does, for example “asks for my recovery phrase” or “posts my home address”. Facts, not anger.
- 5
Send, then decide on blocking
Reporting does not stop the messages. If you want silence, block the account too. Our block list guide shows how to undo it later.
Which report reason should you choose?
Two different menus exist, and most guides only show one.
The reason list is sent by Telegram’s server each time you report. The app asks for the options, shows them, and may open a second level before it asks for a comment. That is why screenshots in older guides often do not match your screen.
Where else can you report besides the button?
Use these when there is no message to tap, when you need a takedown of public content, or when the law gives you a specific route.
Illegal public content
Channels, groups, bots or sticker sets that break the law. Paste the t.me/... links or @usernames; Telegram’s FAQ asks for them. Also the address to contact if you think your own bot, channel or sticker set was banned by mistake.
Copyright
Public channels, bots, groups and sticker sets only. Send it as the owner or an authorised agent. Requests about private chats are not processed.
Child abuse material
The address Telegram lists for child abuse reports, next to the in-app Report button. Never download or forward the material as “proof”.
Someone is pretending to be you
Impersonation of you or your brand. For scam patterns and lost money, see our scammer report guide.
A search word that finds illegal content
Report search terms people use to reach illegal material in Telegram search.
Intimate images of you shared without consent
The route Telegram lists under the US TAKE IT DOWN Act. You or your representative can file.
Digital Services Act notice
Give your name, contact details and a clear explanation of why the content is illegal. Telegram’s single contact point for EU users is @EURegulation. Thin or abusive notices can be dismissed.
Someone is in danger right now? Call your local emergency number first. A Telegram report is not an emergency service.
What happens after you report someone?
Your report joins a review queue that Telegram’s moderators work through together with automated tools. These are the outcomes Telegram itself describes.
- No violation foundNothing changes for the account.
- Spam limitThe sender can only message people who saved their number.
- Frozen accountThey can read chats but cannot send or post. They can appeal.
- Content removed or community blockedFor public posts, channels and groups after legal checks.

“Enough reports get anyone banned.” Telegram publishes no report threshold. A decision follows a review of the content, so one precise report can matter more than a crowd of vague ones.
Should you report, block, or do both?
They solve different problems. Choose your situation and the scorecard marks the best move.
yesnopartly
Do both. Use the bar at the top of a new chat: report the spam, then block. The report protects other people, the block protects you.
What should you save before you report?
The in-app report sends the message itself. Your own record helps if you also email Telegram, the police or a platform that was misused.
Your case file is complete.
What if someone reported you?
A report never punishes on its own. If a review restricts you, the app tells you, and each restriction has its own way back. There is no button to “undo” a report made by someone else.
Spam limit
You can only message people who saved your number. Repeating unwanted messages to strangers can remove your ability to start new chats.
Way back: message @SpamBot or use telegram.org/faq_spam. Our Spam Bot guide walks through it.
Frozen account
Introduced in April 2025 instead of an instant ban: you can still read your chats but cannot send messages or post.
Way back: submit the appeal inside the app; moderators lift the freeze if it was a mistake.
Bot, channel or sticker set banned
Public content removed after a report and legal check.
Way back: write to abuse@telegram.org if you think there was no reason.

Questions people ask about reporting on Telegram
Does Telegram tell someone that you reported them?
No. The apps show the reported person no notice and no reporter name. They only learn something happened if moderators restrict their account or remove their content.
What happens when you report someone on Telegram?
Moderators and automated tools review the reported content. If it breaks the rules, the account can get a spam limit, be frozen, or the public content and community can be removed. If not, nothing changes.
How many reports does it take to ban a Telegram account?
Telegram publishes no number. Decisions follow a review of the content, so a single precise report with the right reason can be enough, while many vague reports may change nothing.
Can you report a private chat on Telegram?
Yes. Since September 2024 every Telegram app lets you report messages in private chats as well as in groups and channels. Tap, hold or right-click the message and choose Report.
How do you report someone on Telegram by email?
Write to abuse@telegram.org and include the t.me links or @usernames of the content. Email works best for public channels, groups, bots and sticker sets; for private chats use the in-app Report button.
Can you undo a report on Telegram?
No. There is no undo button. If you reported by mistake, nothing happens unless the content really breaks the rules, because moderators judge the content, not your click.
Should I block or report a Telegram user?
Block to stop their messages to you, report to put rule-breaking content in front of moderators. For spam from strangers do both from the bar at the top of the new chat.
What can I do if my account was reported and restricted?
For a spam limit, message @SpamBot or use telegram.org/faq_spam. For a frozen account, send the appeal offered inside the app. For a banned bot, channel or sticker set, write to abuse@telegram.org.
Which guides go well with reporting?
How we checked this guide. On 25 October 2026 we read Telegram’s FAQ sections on illegal content, spam and frozen accounts, the moderation overview and its 2026 figures, the EU DSA user guidance, the API pages for messages.report, ReportReason and the new-chat action bar, and Telegram’s announcements from March 2025 and April 2025. Written by the AddTelegramMember team, a Telegram growth service since 2019.
