Telegram Search Engines: What Outside Tools Can Really Find
29/10/2026How to Set a Password for Your Telegram Account (3 Locks Explained)
29/10/2026How do you use Telegram’s search engine?
Telegram’s search engine is the search bar above your chat list. One query looks through your chats and contacts, messages, and public chats and people by @username. The tabs underneath narrow it down: Channels, Apps, Posts, Media, Downloads, Links, Files, Music and Voice.
Inside one chat, open its menu and tap Search: you can look for words, messages from one member (from:) and a day (Jump to Date). Searching every public channel for words is the Posts tab, a Premium feature with a daily allowance; tapping a #hashtag searches big public channels for free.
iPhone: pull the chat list down or tap Search. Android: the magnifier at the top. Desktop: the Search field above the chats.
Where should you search for what you want?
Most failed searches happen in the wrong place. Pick what you are trying to find and the search bar shows where to type it.
- Open the search bar above your chat list.
- Type one or two distinctive words.
- Scroll to the Messages section of the Chats tab.
A rare word beats a long sentence: fewer, more distinctive words give a shorter, better list.
How do you search inside one chat?
Open the chat, then the menu (⋮ on Android, the chat name on iPhone) and Search, or press Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on Mac) in Telegram Desktop. Three tools live in that search bar. Try them on this sample group.
Type a word. Every matching message becomes a result; use the arrows to step through them.
- Android ⋮ › Search
- iPhone chat name › Search
- Desktop Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on Mac)

Can you search posts in every public channel?
Yes, in two ways that work differently. Type a query to see which lane it takes.
Hashtag search
Tap a hashtag in any chat, or type one, and choose Public Posts. Since May 2024 it shows matching posts from big public channels; private chats are never included. Hashtags in public stories work the same way.
- Free for everyone
- Big public channels only
Posts tab: full-text search
Added in July 2025. Type any words and open the Posts tab to search posts from public channels. The app shows how many free searches are left today; when they run out, it offers Search for a number of Stars or a countdown until a free search unlocks.
- Telegram Premium
- Daily allowance, then Stars
Inside one channel
Open the channel, Search, and type. This covers every post in that channel, old ones included, and works for any channel you can open. A hashtag written as #tag@channelname is tied to that one public channel.
- Free
- Full history of that channel
How do you find a channel, group or person?
Start with step 1, the most exact one, and move up only when it fails.
- 1
Exact @username
Type @name in the search bar. Public people, groups, channels and bots appear by username; people who set one can be found without your having their phone number.
Fails when: it is private or the username changed.
- 2
A t.me link
Open t.me/name or an invite link from a website or message. It opens the chat directly, even if search does not list it.
Fails when: the invite link was revoked.
- 3
Name or topic words
Type words from the name in the Chats or Channels tab. Public chats whose names match show under the global results.
Fails when: the name is generic or in another language.
- 4
Similar channels
Join or open a channel you like and look for Similar channels on its profile. Telegram picks public channels with overlapping subscribers.
Fails when: the channel is small or new.
- 5
Outside Telegram
Use external search engines and directories, or Google, which indexes public channels through their t.me pages.
Best for: discovering channels you have never heard of.
What else can Telegram search?
Search is not only the bar above your chats. These six boxes are easy to miss.
A real “search engine” setting
Telegram for Android has a built-in web browser, and you can choose which search engine its address bar uses: Settings › Chat Settings › Web Browser › Search Engine.
Address bar searches and suggestions go to Google.
Tags as filters
Add emoji tags to saved messages like reactions, then tap a tag under the search bar to filter.
Stickers, emoji and GIFs
Type a word in the sticker or emoji panel; keywords work in 36 languages. The GIF panel searches over 350 million GIFs.
Members
Open a group’s member list and use Search members to find someone by name or username.
Settings and FAQ
Android’s Settings has its own search that also finds Telegram FAQ answers.
Downloads
The Downloads tab searches only the files you downloaded on this device, not the cloud.
Are Telegram search bots safe to use?
Bots that promise to search Telegram for you are run by strangers, and a bot reads everything you send it. Tick what a bot asks for and watch the dial.
Nothing alarming ticked. Still, everything you type goes to the bot’s owner, so try Telegram’s own search first.
- Telegram sends login codes in its own service chat, by SMS or to your login email. Never type one into a bot.
- Official bots and accounts carry a verification mark.
Want people to find your channel in Telegram search?
Make it public, put the topic in its name, and post text people would search for: that is what the Chats, Channels and Posts tabs can match. Similar channels come from overlapping audiences, so real readers in your niche matter. If a new channel needs a first audience, these two fit:
Members do not change what search matches; your name and posts do.
What do people ask about Telegram search?
Does Telegram have a search engine?
Yes. The search bar above the chat list searches your chats, contacts and messages, public chats by username, and it has tabs for Channels, Apps, Posts, Media, Downloads, Links, Files, Music and Voice. Each chat also has its own search.
How do I search for a word in all my Telegram chats?
Type the word in the search bar above the chat list and stay on the Chats tab. Matching messages from all your chats appear under the chats and contacts; you can filter them to private chats, groups or channels.
Can I search messages from one person in a group?
Yes. Open the group’s search, then tap the person icon or type from: and pick the member. Only that member’s messages are searched, with or without extra words.
How do I find messages from a specific date?
In the chat’s search, tap the calendar icon and pick a day (Jump to Date). On Telegram Desktop, click the date shown above the messages to open the calendar.
Is Telegram’s post search free?
Hashtag search across big public channels is free. Full-text search in the Posts tab is a Premium feature with a daily number of free searches; after that the app offers extra searches for Stars or a wait until a free one unlocks.
Why can’t I find a channel in Telegram search?
It may be private, its username may have changed, or its name may not contain your words. Try the exact @username or a t.me link, and check the channel’s Similar channels list for ones like it.
Does Telegram search private chats with my contacts?
Your own chats, yes: global search covers your private chats, groups and channels. Other people’s private chats never appear in any search, including hashtag and post search.
Which guides go well with this one?
How we checked this guide. On 27 October 2026 we read Telegram’s developer page on search and filters and the public post search method, the Bot API hashtag formats, Telegram’s announcements of hashtag search, public post search, search filters and similar channels, and the English text and settings code of Telegram for Android, Telegram for iOS and Telegram Desktop. Menu names can differ slightly between app versions. Written by the AddTelegramMember team, a Telegram growth service since 2019.
