How do you reduce the size of photos on Telegram?
Short answer: send the picture as a normal photo, not in HD and not as a file. Telegram then shrinks it to 1,280 pixels on the longest side and re-saves it as a JPEG, which in our test cut a 10 megapixel photo to 16% of its size. Crop first if it is a tall screenshot, and shrink pictures yourself before you send them as files.
- 1,280 pxlongest side of a normal photo
- 2,560 pxlongest side in HD
- 800 pxprofile photo, Android app
Our 10 megapixel test photo (3,888 x 2,592 pixels, 718 KB) after the setting Telegram’s Android app uses for normal photos.
What does Telegram do to every photo you send?
It follows a fixed recipe: scale the picture down to a maximum size, then re-save it as a JPEG at a set quality. Here are the exact numbers in Telegram’s own open source apps.
- 1ScaleLongest side down to 1,280 px, or 2,560 px in HD. Smaller photos are never enlarged.
- 2Re-saveJPEG quality 80 for a normal photo and 99 for HD.
- 3UploadPlus a tiny 90 px preview at quality 55 so the chat shows something at once.

What it means for you. A normal photo is always small, whatever camera took it. The original file only travels if you send it as a file.
Telegram’s own claim. HD photos have four times the pixels of a normal photo and use less than 0.5 MB of data, according to Telegram’s June 2025 announcement.
How much smaller does each setting make a photo?
We re-ran each app’s exact settings on three real images with a standard JPEG encoder and weighed the results. Pick a subject.
A 3,888 x 2,592 pixel photo of boats from OpenCV’s public test images, 718 KB as a JPEG.
Normal photos shrink this picture to 16 to 21% of its size. Android’s HD setting saves at quality 99, so its upload came out bigger than the original.
The normal photo squeezed this 1,170 x 2,532 screenshot to 591 x 1,280 pixels, so small text loses detail when you zoom in.
How we tested. On 26 October 2026 we resized each image with the limits and JPEG qualities found in Telegram’s source code (Android 1,280 px at quality 80 and 2,560 px at 99; Desktop 1,280 or 2,560 px at 87) using the Pillow library. Telegram’s own encoders can produce slightly different sizes, and we cannot see whether Telegram’s servers change a photo again after upload. Telegram says HD photos use under 0.5 MB of data.
Which way should you send your picture?
Pick what you are sending. The plate shows the lightest way that still does the job.
Leave the SD button as it is. The photo arrives at 1,280 pixels, which looks sharp on any phone screen.
Expect about100 to 200 KB
How do you send a smaller photo, step by step?
The lightest upload is the default one. These steps make sure you are not sending a heavier version by accident.
- Open the attachment menuTap the paperclip in the chat and pick your photos from the gallery grid.
- Crop what you do not needTap the photo, then the crop tool. Fewer pixels means a smaller photo, and a cropped screenshot keeps bigger text.
- Check the quality buttonIn the editor the button should read SD. If it reads HD, tap it once to switch back.
- Send it as a photoTap send from the gallery grid. Do not choose File, which uploads the full original.
Not this. Sending through File, Send In High Quality or a cloud link keeps the big original. Use those only when the person needs every pixel.
Why do tall screenshots come out blurry?
Telegram limits the longest side, and on a phone screenshot the longest side is the height. The width shrinks with it, so text gets smaller than you expect. Try your own screen size.
Arrives as 591 x 1,280 pixels. Text keeps about half of its width, so small print gets hard to read.
Crop to the part that matters before sending. A screenshot cropped to a square keeps its full width as long as both sides stay under 1,280 pixels.
How do you shrink a photo you must send as a file?
A file is delivered byte for byte, so Telegram does not make it smaller. Do the reduction yourself before you attach it.
Export at 2,560 px on the long side and quality 80 to 85. On a screen the difference from the original is hard to see.
Lossless and heavy for photos. Keep it for logos and charts with sharp edges.
iPhone photos are often HEIC. Some Windows PCs cannot open them, so convert to JPEG if the other person might struggle.
Smaller than JPEG at the same look. Fine for designers and web teams, less handy for printing.

What size should profile photos and channel images be?
Upload them close to the size Telegram keeps, and nothing heavy is wasted.
Telegram’s Android app saves your profile photo at 800 x 800 pixels plus a 150 x 150 thumbnail. A square photo of 800 pixels or a bit more loses nothing, and a bigger original adds nothing because the app scales it down before uploading.
Normal photos arrive at 1,280 pixels on the long side. Design post images at that size and they will not be scaled down. Put important text in the middle and large enough to read on a phone.

Light posts load fast. Do people actually see them?
A well-sized image opens instantly, even on slow data. If you also want the post itself to look active, these two services are a simple start. Both are optional.
What else do people ask about photo size on Telegram?
Does Telegram compress photos?
Yes. Photos sent the normal way are scaled to 1,280 pixels on the longest side and re-saved as JPEG. HD photos go up to 2,560 pixels. Only photos sent as a file keep their original size.
How do I send a smaller photo on Telegram?
Send it as a normal photo with the quality button on SD, and crop away anything you do not need first. In our test that turned a 718 KB photo into a 115 KB one.
How big is a photo after Telegram compresses it?
Often 100 to 200 KB for a normal photo, depending on how much detail it has. Our 10 megapixel test photo came out at 115 KB on Android’s setting and 153 KB on Desktop’s.
Why does my screenshot look blurry on Telegram?
The longest side of a phone screenshot is its height, so a 1,170 x 2,532 screenshot is cut to 591 x 1,280 pixels. Crop it or send it in HD to keep small text readable.
How do I reduce a photo’s size before sending it as a file?
Resize it to about 2,560 pixels on the long side and export it as a JPEG at quality 80 to 85 in any photo editor. Files are delivered unchanged, so Telegram will not shrink them for you.
What size should a Telegram profile photo be?
Use a square image of at least 800 x 800 pixels. Telegram’s Android app stores profile photos at 800 x 800, so a larger upload adds nothing you can see.
Does sending in HD use more data?
Yes, HD photos have four times the pixels of normal photos. Telegram says they still use less than 0.5 MB of data, so switch HD on only when detail matters.
Will smaller photos free up space on my phone?
Only for new photos. Telegram keeps downloaded media in its cache, so clear the cache in Data and Storage settings to free space now.
Which guides go well with this one?
How we checked this guide. On 26 October 2026 we read the photo code in Telegram’s open source apps for Android, iPhone and Desktop, checked Telegram’s June 2025 HD photos announcement, and measured the results on three images, including OpenCV’s public test photos.
