How Many Telegram Groups Can I Create?
Telegram does not publish a number for how many groups you can create. The ceiling you actually hit is membership: you can be in 500 groups and channels combined, or 1,000 with Telegram Premium, and every group you create counts because you are in it. Only 10 of them can have a public link (20 with Premium).
Below: the exact limits, what each error message means, how to free a slot in minutes, and when one big group beats ten small ones.

What are the real group limits in 2026?
Four numbers decide how many groups you can run. Slide to your own count and see how much room you have left.
Room to spare. You can create or join 180 more groups and channels.
500 / 1,000 Premium groups and channels together. Joined, created or admin, each one takes a seat.
10 / 20 Premium public groups and channels you own. Private groups with invite links do not use it.
200 in a basic group, 200,000 in a supergroup, no cap in a broadcast group.
No published number. Create too fast and Telegram answers “Too many attempts, please try again in” a set time.
Telegram’s own config names the 500 and 1,000 limits for “channels and supergroups”. The Android app shows the same “too many communities” stop when you create a basic group, so plan with one shared budget. Limits for channels alone are in our guide on how many Telegram channels you can create.
Basic group, supergroup or broadcast group: which room are you building?
They look alike in your chat list. Under the hood they are three different buildings with different ceilings.

Why this matters for your count. In the current Telegram for Android source, New Group creates a basic group with messages.createChat. When you add a public link, need more than 200 members or switch on a supergroup-only setting, Telegram migrates it to a supergroup and the old chat points to the new one. If you are already at the community limit at that moment, the app stops you with “For technical reasons, you need to leave some first before changing this setting in your groups”.
Can you go back? No. Telegram has no way to turn a supergroup back into a basic group, or a broadcast group back into a normal one. Step-by-step conversion is in convert a group to a supergroup.
How do you create a new Telegram group?
Pick your app. The route is short everywhere, and you can add members later.
On the Chats screen tap the round pencil button, or open the menu, and choose New Group.
Tick the contacts to add. On Android you can also continue with nobody selected and invite people later.
Tap the arrow, type a group name, add a photo if you like, and tap the check mark.
Open Chats and tap the compose icon in the top right corner.
Tap New Group, select members and tap Next.
Enter a name and tap Create.
In Telegram Desktop open the menu (three lines, top left) and click New Group.
Type the group name, then click Next.
Select members and click Create.
At web.telegram.org click the pencil button at the bottom of the chat list and choose New Group.
Add members, then continue.
Name the group and confirm.

What does each group limit error mean, and how do you fix it?
These are the real messages the apps show. Tap a sign to turn it over.
Leave a few you no longer read. On Android the sheet for this error lists your inactive groups and channels, shows how long each has been quiet, and lets you leave several in one tap.
Make an older one private or remove its link, then try again. A private group with an invite link is unlimited here.
Wait the time shown. Repeating the action resets nothing and can make the wait longer.

Upgrade the basic group to a supergroup. At 200,000, Telegram offers a broadcast group, where only admins post.
Telegram does not publish these numbers. Remove an admin or bot you do not need, then add the new one.
Is it true you can only create 50 groups a day?
Claims that circulate in guides and forums, checked against Telegram’s documentation and app code.
“You can create up to 50 groups a day.”
Telegram publishes no daily number. Creating fast triggers a flood wait whose length the server decides, so any fixed figure is a guess.

Archive and mute only hide it. You are still a member, so it still counts. Leaving is what frees the seat.

One seat in your budget instead of ten. Each subject gets its own thread inside the group. Topics appear once the group passes a member threshold that Telegram’s servers set; the Android app’s built-in default is 200 members.

Telegram has no published limit on how many groups you create. You can keep creating groups while your total of groups and channels stays under 500, or 1,000 with Telegram Premium, because you are a member of every group you create.
How many groups can I join on Telegram?
Up to 500 groups and channels combined on a free account and 1,000 with Telegram Premium. Leaving a group frees its slot; archiving or muting does not.
How many members can a Telegram group have?
A basic group holds up to 200 members and a supergroup up to 200,000. A supergroup at the cap can become a broadcast group with no member limit, where only admins can send messages.

What does “too many communities” mean on Telegram?
It means you are in the maximum number of groups and channels. Leave some to create or join a new one. On Android the error sheet lists your inactive chats, with how long each has been quiet, so you can pick which to leave.
Does Telegram Premium increase group limits?
Yes. Premium raises the groups and channels you can be in from 500 to 1,000 and your public links from 10 to 20. It does not change the 200,000 member cap of a supergroup.
Can I make my group bigger than 200,000 members?
Only by converting it to a broadcast group, which Telegram offers when the group reaches 200,000. After conversion only admins can post, and the change cannot be undone.
